I have never understood why people are afraid of face oils. There is nothing to fear! I promise!
But, in all seriousness, they can be dangerous (for your skin, haha!) if not used properly. This post will be a partial review/how to guide for what face oils I have tried (and then thrown away) and how I use face oils.
If you have been keeping up with my blog you know that I have been loving coconut oil for just about every skin care need and using it as a face oil is no exception. I’m not going to go into extreme levels of detail on coconut oil in this post because I feel like I already have, but I felt it deserved an honorable mention in my face oil post. See my ode to coconut oil here.
There are a few ways to use face oil, the easiest way if you are concerned about breakouts or being too oily, is to just use it at night. This is what I typically do, unless I am not leaving the house then I will slather it on in the morning and let my face soak it up all day. So at night, I will wash my face and then I will apply eye cream, then I will take 3-4 drops of face oil and I will massage it into my face. Then sleeps! If I am using during the day, the same process, I will wash and dry my face, then apply eye cream and then I will massage 3-4 drops of face oil into my skin.
I have used a few different brands, I tend to go with the ‘try anything once’ mentality and buy things in sample sizes, and then if I like it, purchase the full size. Sephora and Ulta have such good impulse sections! They kill me.
My favorite face oil is the Josie Maran Argan Face Oil Light, I have tried both the original and the light and I like the light version better. For me the original formula was very thick and took a long time to absorb. The light oil absorbs much easier and faster into my skin and can be used both day and night, I also like to use the oil sometimes before I apply makeup, especially if I am going for a ‘dewy’ look. I saw Jaclyn Hill mix face oil with her foundation and I thought it was super interesting, I don’t mix it with my foundation, it just didn’t work for me, but I will apply some before and let it soak into my skin a bit before putting a primer on my face.
Fresh Seaberry Oil I am not a fan of this oil, I don’t know if it’s the smell or the way my skin reacted to it, but I got a trial size and I put it on every night for a week. My face got really bright red and got these dry patches all over it. I think there is an ingredient in it that I am allergic to. It has pretty good reviews on Sephora’s website but it’s definitely not for people who have sensitive skin! Or at least not my skin type…
Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Oil Drunk Elephant is a new Sephora brand that I caught while I was browsing online one day and I bought a value set that included their oil. It does make my skin feel good, buuuuut I don’t think it’s any better than a really good lotion. It’s supposed to help reduce fine lines and improve skin tone, I don’t know that it helped with any of my fine lines (especially for $72!). It does feel nice but the price point is definitely a deterrent for me.
I’m just loyal to my Josie Maran oil, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, right?!
What face oils is everyone into? Do you have a favorite brand? What’s the best way to use them for you?
Comment below, I love hearing from everyone!
